Trendabl’s Blog of the Moment - And I Was Like
This week, we met up with the banging betty of And I Was Like, Bridget Helene Bahl, to pick her brain about what it takes to create a successful fashion/lifestyle blog. After working in the Public Relations department of Yves Saint Laurent for the past five years, Bridget was ready for a change. She decided it was time to trade in her Tributes for something a bit more rewarding – a site that discusses all things that girls discuss. And alas, And I Was Like was born. B’s blog not only features pretty pics (many by the talented Abby Warhola – Andy Warhol’s niece!) and helpful beauty tips, but it also encompasses a sense of humor that keeps you scrolling for more. Get to know Bridget in this quirky Q & A:
Why did you initially decide to start a blog?
It’s been a long time coming. I wanted to create a space that felt like a diary of sorts that features my friends and I, the things we do, places we go, products we use and trends we love. I think it’s a fun look into the lives of real girls working and playing in NYC. I also wanted to feature the amazing people I have met in the fashion world that inspire me. I wanted to create an aspirational, yet obtainable destination for girls to check out fashion, beauty and lifestyle trends.
What is the story behind your blog’s title?
I wanted the voice of my site to feel familiar, like texting with your best friend. So I started paying attention to conversations with my friends and there was a whole lot of “and I was like, then he was like” going on. Now I hear it everywhere.
What type of camera do you use?
A Canon T3i, but I am starting to experiment with new lenses. I also shoot with my girlfriend, Abby Warhola quite a bit. She’s a Warhol and clearly a natural talent.
What do you do when you’re not blogging?
Hang out with my man, explore the city with my girlfriends, go home to Pittsburgh and cheer for the Steelers with my family, read, try to figure out meditation, workout - I love Physique 57 and I am a regular at Flywheel (spinning). I also recently became a member at Erno Laszlo and have been spending a ton of time there working on my skin - post summer!
What are your personal favorite blogs?
Any advice for anyone who wants to start her own fashion blog?
Just start. I waited to launch because I wanted the site to be perfect, but honestly it’s still evolving. Just start, be open to constructive criticism (still working on that one) and be yourself.
What are the best aspects of running your own blog? What are the hardest aspects?
I love working for myself, although it can be a double-edged sword. If I slack, I am only hurting myself, but having total creative freedom is a godsend. My favorite part, by far, are the emails I get from readers. I love getting to know “my” girls!
What fashion and/or beauty product can you not live without at the moment?
Obagi Vitamin C Serum, Nars Premium tinted moisturizer, MAC Fix and my Alexander Wang Kori boots… still living in them.
Where are your favorite places to shop in the city?
Are there any trends you’re particularly inspired by this season?
I’m feeling super inspired by all things 90’s, specifically the movie “Clueless.” I know that wasn’t necessarily a “trend”, but think about it… midriffs, kilted plaid skirts, angora sweaters, knee highs…all of those things are happening right now and I am fully embracing them.
If you could shop anyone’s closet, whose would it be?
Kate Bosworth. Has she ever done wrong? Girl is great at mixing high and low and can steal the show anywhere, whether it be the Met Gala or Coachella.
What fashion motto do you live by?
"I think you only regret the things you don’t do. Even things that were not good, you process them and they become part of something else, and something good comes out of it." - Diane Von Furstenberg
